Chapter 14: Food for Thought

It was a stiflingly hot Saturday morning, and the crew were gathered again in the cool interior of Seagrave’s library, enjoying another buffet breakfast. As before, they’d each shared their previous findings and were comparing notes. Martin, however, was feeling grumpy. And not about Tamara, who was still stomping around the apartment like she was checking for termites.

He had read and reread the statements of everybody present at the party that bloody night and found nothing of any significance, not one interesting morsel. The police certainly hadn’t noted anything, but Earle quickly explained that they wouldn’t have because they were wholly focused on Heathcliff.

“DI Morgan refuses to see beyond the bleeding obvious, so we’re on our own, folks.”

They all nodded. They had always assumed as much.

“So, how d’you go with Lia then?” Martin asked Kila.

Surprised, he glanced up from his coffee. “Lia? Oh, she was babysitting her boss’s kids last night, so I’m going to see her tonight.”

“What are you, a vampire? Can’t visit her during the day like a normal person?” said Martin. “Get her on her lunch break?”

“Hey man, nothing normal about the way I operate. When it comes to the ladies, night-time is my theatre.” Kila grinned at that, but Martin wasn’t amused.

“You’re the one who put this tight deadline in place, do I need to remind you of that?”

“Chill, Marty babe. I’ll get what I need out of Lia. It’ll happen. I did track down the infamous Woko Wangi and confirmed what Lia said. He was recording a rap EP with Heath about a month before the murders.”

He produced the CD that Woko had given him and tossed it on the table beside the police file.

Merry grabbed it and glanced across the titles. “Any clues in the lyrics?”

“No idea. They couldn’t pay me enough to listen to that shit. Oh hang on, they’re not.”

“I’ll do it!” Merry popped the CD into her handbag. “I don’t mind a bit of hip-hop. My Archie is into drill rap, whatever that means.”

“I think that means he’s headed for a life of crime,” said Frankie, who also knew her music. “You reckon there’ll be a song on there from Heath about slaughtering his whole family?”

She giggled. “Hope not or we’ll be out a million bucks!”

“So, Kila, did you get one of your infamous vibes about whether this Woko clown was a killer?” asked Martin, still intent on moving things forward.

Kila shrugged. “He’s short on cash; that could’ve been the motive. Had a few red-letter bills lying about, and I spotted a bit of bedding. Have a hunch he bunks down in his studio, can’t afford a rental.”

“Oh, that’s well spotted! You are so good at this!” said Merry, and he pushed his top lip up, Elvis Presley-style.

“Thank you, thank you very much.”

She giggled.

Martin stared hard at him, softly stroking his nose. “Considering nothing was pinched during the murders, Kila, how exactly is that a motive?”

Kila shrugged and held his gaze.
